Spoke of promoting links with the community by giving the police station a friendly face. However, before discussions on the style of construction and building materials, municipalities building a new police station must face an equally important question: where should it be located? After conducting site surveys for many police stations and other community projects, we can suggest several factors that affect site selection.

Yes, the cost is certainly part of it, but there are other considerations. Where is the old police station, for example? Is it large enough to be renovated? Does it have enough properties to build an addition? Otherwise, keep in mind that even if the existing station is leveled and replaced on the same site. The municipality will not have to pay for the land. Can the old station be sold or converted for other government use? The answers to these questions are different for each community, but what generally contributes is history, people, and context.

City Center

Another important consideration: how close should the station be to the city center or the city center? As you will see, it sometimes makes sense to build a station in or near the least populated areas of a community. Should the police station be one or more stories? The former usually requires a larger parcel of land, and the village/town can save money by avoiding elevators, ramps, and tilt changes. The disadvantage of a one-story installation, however, is that it occupies more land, which is less durable.

Municipalities with dense downtown areas often choose to place their new police stations in the middle of the action. An example is the village of Arlington Heights, Illinois (75,500 residents, founded in 1887). Was part of an urban campus in the middle of an active downtown area with retailers, restaurants, and apartments.
