Installing A Glass Mosaic Tile Backsplash

A good installation of glass tiles begins with preparing the walls. For installations in bathrooms and other high humidity areas, I usually give the walls a layer of liquid stress cracking membrane. I’m following this app with a flood of the thin-set recommend by the manufacturer of the glass tile I’m going to install.

With the mesh backing, you can install the tiny glass tiles in one sheet. First, spread a thin, even layer of a thin film on the wall. Using a notched trowel with the recommended teeth, comb the thin-set in one direction. Since the thin-set will be visible through the glass tile, it is important to use a white thin-set and ensure that you are using the thinset recommended by the glass tile manufacturer. It is equally important to cover the thinset 100% – especially with glass tiles with a mesh back.

To get 100% coverage, use the flat side of the trowel to spread the thin-set as close to the wall as possible so it is almost smooth. Then go over the notched side of the trowel (use the correct teeth for the tile size) and paint the thin-set evenly in one direction. Finally, return to the flat side of the trowel and smooth out all the ribs of the thin-set without scraping the thinset while maintaining a uniform thickness.

When the thinset is ready, slide the glass plate in and slide the tile back and forth until it is 100% embedded in the thinset. The white thread on the back of the sheet should completely disappear into the thin-set. Sometimes some threads of the mesh will be visible next to the joints, but only if you view the tile from an angle. If in doubt, try your installation methods on a small area first.
